Lesson 11

Learning how to rotate image canvas and cut away unneeded areas

Introduction

Basic photo corrections usually include the general workflow in the following sequence:

·   Make a copy of the original and work on the copy.

·   Trim unneeded areas.

·   Ensure that image resolution or print dimensions are right for use.

·   Clean out stains.

·   Adjust tonal range and remove unwanted color casts.

·   Adjust lightness and saturation on specific areas.

·   Sharpen the overall focus of the photo.

The following lesson will teach you how to rotate image canvas and then cut away unneeded areas from the photo.

Step #1:

·   Open a file with objects slant to one side and dimensions larger than desired.

Step #2:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose File > Saves as.

Save the opened file in another name so that we can go back to the original later when required.

Step #3:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose Image > Rotate Canvas > Arbitrary.

Step #4:
"Rotate Canvas” dialog box appears.

·   Enter 1.2 in “Angle”.

·   Choose ºCW .

·   Click [ OK ] to apply the setting.

Subsequent to rotation, white areas appear on all sides of the photo, revealing the default background color.
Step #5:
From the “Toolbox”:

·   Look for “Crop and slice tools”.

·   Select the [ Crop ] tool.

Step #6:
In the “Options bar”:

·   Enter 2 in “Width”.

·   Enter 3 in “Height”.

Step #7:

·   Drag the crop marquee from the upper left corner, just inside the white areas, to the lower right corner.

As we drag, the marquee retains the same proportion, that is 2 × 3, as specified in the Options bar.

Step #8:

When the marquee touches the lower right corner and just outside the white areas:

·   Release the mouse button.

A cropping shield covers the area outside the cropping selection.

Notice: There is no need to be precise. We’ll edit the marquee size later.

Step #9:
In the “Options bar”:

·   Uncheck [ Perspective ] check box.

Step #10:

·   Drag the corner handles to adjust the size of the marquee, so that the marquee contains all parts of the photo we want, and no white areas are included.

Step #11:

·   Place the pointer inside the crop marquee.

·   Drag the marquee slightly downward until the top border of the marquee touches the top of the highest building in the photo.

·   Press [ Enter ].

The image is now straightened and cropped to a 2 × 3 ratio.
Step #12:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose File > Save.

Save our work and then go to the next lesson.

Conclusion

In this lesson, we learned that before starting to correct a photo, we should make a copy of the photo and work on the copy. Thus, we can go back to the original later when required.

We also learned how to rotate the canvas and cut away unneeded areas from a photo.
