Pixel Dimensions vs. Print Size
The term “pixel dimensions” is a
description of the dimensions of a
photo measured in pixels: how many
pixels across by how many pixels
down. Image resolution refers to how
many pixels there are per unit
dimension. Megapixel value is a
standard measurement used to
illustrate the pixel dimensions of
an image.
A
4-megapixel camera has 2272x1704
pixel dimensions. If a printer has a
resolution setting of 200 dpi, its
print size can be: 2272÷200 = 11.36”
by 1704÷200 = 8.52”. Accordingly,
its maximum print size should be
around 8” x 10”, or, 8.5” x 12”.
Printing any larger than that will
mean a decrease in quality.
The following table gives you the
approximate maximum print size for
different pixel dimensions.

Generally, the more pixels an image
has, the bigger and better quality
print you can make. If you make
large prints with plenty of details,
you will need a camera with more megapixel.
