Adobe Photoshop CS2

Level 3

Lesson 1

About the work area.

Introduction

In this lesson, we will give you an overview of some of the features that you will find in Adobe CS2’s work area.

You will also learn the list of file formats that the program can open.

Step #1:

·   Launch Adobe Photoshop CS2.

The program window will appear with:

(a)   Welcome window

(b)  Palettes

(c)   Menu bar

(d)  Options bar

(e)   Toolbox

Step #2:
Over the  Welcome window:

·   Click the [ Close ] button to close it now.

The gray area is where an open file will be displayed.

Step #3:

·   Go to the “Menu bar".

·   Choose File > Open.

Step #4:
The “Open” dialog box appears.

·   From “Files of type”, choose “All Formats”.

You will see a list of file formats that Photoshop can open.

Step #5:

·   Open any file that is saved in one of the file formats on the list.

The open file will include the following:

(a)   A Document window containing the open file.

(b)   A Title bar on the top border of the document window. This displays the image’s title, zoom level, current layer and image mode.

(c)   A Status bar on the bottom border of the document window. This shows the image’s zoom level, document size, and more.

Note: You can reposition the document window by dragging its title bar across the screen.

Step #6:
The “Menu bar” contains menus arranged by task.

·   Choose a menu on the Menu bar. This will allow you to see the items under that menu.

·   As you move the pointer along a menu, each menu item will be highlighted. Menu items that are displayed with a small triangle contain a list of hidden menu items.

The “Options bar” offers different options for using a tool. It is context sensitive — changes as we select different tools.

For example, if you choose the selection tool, the “Selection options” that will be displayed are:

(a)   New selection

(b)   Add to selection

(c)   Subtract from selection

(d)   Intersect with selection

The “Palettes” will help you check and edit your work.

Most palettes contain the same basic elements, such as:

(a)   Title bar

(b)   Tab

(c)   Options

Note: You can reposition a palette by dragging its title bar across the screen.

Step #7:

·   Hold down the mouse button over the small triangle in the upper right corner of the palette. This will display a palette menu.

Step #8:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose File > Close.

Close the file now, before we go to the next lesson.
