Lesson 9

In this lesson, you will learn how to use the Magic Wand tool to select areas based on a similarity in color.

Introduction

Magic Wand tool selects areas based on a range of color similarity. This tool is inaccurate, however it is convenient and useful in defining rough selection outlines.

This lesson will teach you how to use the Magic Wand tool to select a consistently colored area, and then how to reverse the selection outline to select the areas that were initially not selected.

Step #1:

·   Open a file that has a consistently colored area, such as a blue sky.

Step #2:
From the “Toolbox”:

·   Look for “Selection tools”.

·   Select the [ Magic Wand ] tool.

Step #3:
In the  “Options bar”:

·   Choose [ New selection ] from “Selection options”.

·   Enter 32 in the text box labeled “Tolerance”.

·   Check [ Anti-alias ].

·   Check [ Contiguous ].

Step #4:

·   Position the pointer over the blue sky and click inside the boundaries.

The Magic Wand tool will recognize the color and select colors that are similar to it.

Half of the blue sky is selected.

Step #5:
In the “Options bar”:

·   Choose [Add to selection] in “Selection options”.

Step #6:

·   Click once in the blue areas that were not selected.

·   Continue to click in each blue area that was not selected, until all the blue sky is selected.

Since you chose the Contiguous option earlier, the selection is limited to neighboring pixels only.

The blue sky is completely selected.

Step #7:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose Select > Inverse.

Now the selection is reversed. The area under the blue sky is now selected and can be edited.

The blue sky is no longer selected and cannot be edited.

Step #8:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.

Step #9:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose Select > Deselect.

The area under the sky now looks like different shades of gray.
