Level 3

Lesson 6

In this lesson, you will learn how to use the Rectangular Marquee tool to select a rectangular object.

Introduction

The following lesson will teach you how to make a rectangular selection using the Rectangular Marquee tool, and how to reposition the selected object using the Move tool.

Step #1:

·   Open a file that contains a rectangular shape, such as a window or a door.

Step #2:
From the “Toolbox”:

·   Look for “Selection Tools”.

·   Under “Marquees”, hold the mouse button down above the small triangle to reveal the hidden tools.

·   Click to select the [Rectangular Marquee] tool.

Step #3:
In the “Options bar”:

·   Choose [ New Selection ] from “Selection Options”.

·   Enter 0 in “Feather”.

·   Choose Normal as the “Style”.

Step #4:

·   Place the tool’s pointer on the upper left corner of the door’s window.

·   Hold the mouse button down and drag the mouse diagonally towards the lower right corner of the door’s window (follow the direction of the red arrow).

Step #5:

·   Release the mouse button when a dotted line appears around the door’s window. This line is called a “Selection Border” or “Marquee”.

If you cannot select the window perfectly, you can reposition the selection border slightly by:

·   Pressing the arrow keys (on the keyboard) to move the selection border by 1-pixel increments.

Step #6:
From the “Toolbox”:

·   Look for the “Selection Tools”.

·   Click to select the [ Move ] tool.

Step #7:

·   Place the tool pointer inside the selection border.

·   Press the left mouse button and drag the selected area to the white wall.

·   When the selected area is positioned on the wall, release the mouse button.

Step #8:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose Select > Deselect

Note: Do not forget to deselect the selection whenever you stop working on an area of the photograph. If you do not do so, effort may be wasted before you realize that you have been working on the wrong area.

The door window is now positioned on the wall and there is a white background where the window was cut.

Conclusion

In this lesson, you learned how to select a rectangular window and reposition it using the move tool.

You also learned that moving a portion of a digital image is similar to cutting out a shape from a piece of paper - a hole is made, showing the default background color.
