Lesson 16

Learning how to change the saturation of color in specific areas using the Sponge tool

Introduction

The Sponge tool, when set to Desaturate, decreases saturation of color in a color image or decreases contrast in a grayscale image; when set to Saturate, increases saturation of color in a color image or increases contrast in a grayscale image.

The following lesson will teach you how to increase saturation of color in specific areas by using the Sponge tool.

In Lesson #15, we have darkened some areas in the photo.

In this lesson, we will increase the saturation of color in the red building.

Step #1:
From the “Toolbox”:

·   Select the [ Zoom ] tool.

Step #2:

·   Drag a rectangle to enclose the top of the red building.

The image enlarges so that the top of the red building fills the document window.

Step #3:
From the “Toolbox”:

·   Look for “Retouching tools”.

·   Over “Dodge” tool, hold down the mouse button above the small triangle to show all the hidden tools.

·   Click to select the [ Sponge ] tool.

Step #4:
In the “Options bar”:

·   Click the small triangle next to “Brush” to show the brush pop-up palette.

·   Select a small, hard-edged brush, such as 3.

·   After that, click outside the palette to close it.

Step #5:

·   Select Saturate in the “Mode” pop-up menu.

·   Enter 70 in “Flow”.

Step #6:

·   Using the Sponge tool, drag over the green spike on the red building.

Step #7:
In the “Options bar”:

·   Click the small triangle next to “Brush” to show the brush pop-up palette.

·   Select a large, soft-edged brush, such as 21.

·   After that, click outside the palette to close it.

Step #8:

·   Using the Sponge tool, drag with smooth, broad sweeps over the red building.

Notice: Repeated sweep will intensify the effect and make the colors appear unreal.

Step #9:
From the “Toolbox”:

·   Select the [ Hand ] tool.

Step #10:

·   Drag with the hand to scroll the document window so we can see other areas of the red building.

·   Select the [ Sponge ] tool again.

·   Using the Sponge tool, continue to drag over the red building.

Step #11:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

Choose View > Fit on Screen

The colors on the red building are strengthened.
Step #12:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”

·   Choose File > Save

Save our work and then go to the next lesson.
