Learning how to darken specific
areas in an image |

Introduction |
The Burn tool is based on the
traditional burning-in technique of
increasing the amount of exposure to
darken areas on a photo.
The following lesson will teach you
how to darken specific areas by
using the Burn tool. |

In Lesson #14, we have adjusted the
overall contrast and color of the
photo.
In this lesson, we will dim the
reflection from cars and from the
glass windows in the red building.
We will also darken the narrow piece
of area on the bottom of the photo
which is lighter than its
surrounding areas. |

Step #1: |

From the
“Toolbox”:
·
Select the
[ Zoom ]
tool. |
 |
 |
|
Step #2: |
|
|
·
Drag a rectangle to enclose the red
building. |
 |
|
The image enlarges so that the red
building fills the document window. |
 |
 |

Step #3: |

From the
“Toolbox”:
·
Look for
“Retouching tools”.
·
Over
“Dodge”
tool,
hold down the mouse button above the
small triangle to show all the
hidden tools.
·
Click to select the
[ Burn ]
tool. |

In the
“Options bar”:
·
Click the small triangle next to
“Brush”
to show the brush pop-up palette.
·
Select the Hard Round 13 pixels
brush tip.
·
After that, click outside the
palette to close it. |

Select Highlights from
“Range”
— to modify only the light pixels.
·
Enter 50 in
“Exposure”. |

Drag with vertical strokes over the
glass windows to subdue the
highlights. |

“Toolbox”:

Select the
[ Hand ]
tool. |

Drag with the hand to scroll the
document window so we can see the
cars and areas near the bottom of
the photo. |

Select the
[ Burn ]
tool again. |

In the “Options bar”:

Click the small triangle next to
“Brush”
to show the brush pop-up palette.
·
Select the hard Round 5 pixels brush tip.
·
After that, click outside the palette to close
it. |

“Exposure”. |

Drag with horizontal strokes over
the cars to subdue the highlights. |

To the narrow piece of bright area
on the bottom of the photo, we will
apply the Burn tool in a straight
line by:

Click a starting point on the left
side of the area.
·
Hold down the Shift key, and click
an end point on the right side of
the area. |

Go to the
“Menu bar”.
Choose View > Fit on Screen |
 |

The bright areas in the glass
windows, on the cars and on the road
are darkened. |

Save our work and then go to the
