Lesson 15

Learning how to darken specific areas in an image

Introduction

The Burn tool is based on the traditional burning-in technique of increasing the amount of exposure to darken areas on a photo.

The following lesson will teach you how to darken specific areas by using the Burn tool.

In Lesson #14, we have adjusted the overall contrast and color of the photo.

In this lesson, we will dim the reflection from cars and from the glass windows in the red building. We will also darken the narrow piece of area on the bottom of the photo which is lighter than its surrounding areas.

Step #1:
From the “Toolbox”:

·   Select the [ Zoom ] tool.

Step #2:

·   Drag a rectangle to enclose the red building.

The image enlarges so that the red building fills the document window.

Step #3:
From the “Toolbox”:

·   Look for “Retouching tools”.

·   Over “Dodge” tool, hold down the mouse button above the small triangle to show all the hidden tools.

·   Click to select the [ Burn ] tool.

Step #4:
In the “Options bar”:

·   Click the small triangle next to “Brush” to show the brush pop-up palette.

·   Select the Hard Round 13 pixels brush tip.

·   After that, click outside the palette to close it.

Step #5:

·   Select Highlights from “Range” — to modify only the light pixels.

·   Enter 50 in “Exposure”.

Step #6:

·   Drag with vertical strokes over the glass windows to subdue the highlights.

Step #7:
From the “Toolbox”:

·   Select the [ Hand ] tool.

Step #8:

·   Drag with the hand to scroll the document window so we can see the cars and areas near the bottom of the photo.

Step #9:

·   Select the [ Burn ] tool again.

Step #10:
In the “Options bar”:

·   Click the small triangle next to “Brush” to show the brush pop-up palette.

·   Select the hard Round 5 pixels brush tip.

·   After that, click outside the palette to close it.

Step #11:

·   Range”.

·   Enter 60 in “Exposure”.

Step #12:

·   Drag with horizontal strokes over the cars to subdue the highlights.

Step #13:
To the narrow piece of bright area on the bottom of the photo, we will apply the Burn tool in a straight line by:

·   Click a starting point on the left side of the area.

·   Hold down the Shift key, and click an end point on the right side of the area.

Step #14:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

Choose View > Fit on Screen

The bright areas in the glass windows, on the cars and on the road are darkened.
Step #15:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”

·   Choose File > Save

Save our work and then go to the next lesson.
