Lesson 13

Learning how to remove stains by using the Dust & Scratches filter

Introduction

The Dust & Scratches filter reduces noise in an image by searching for differing pixels and then softening them.

The following lesson will teach you how to remove stain from a photo by using the Dust & Scratches filter.

Step #1:
In Lesson #12, we have changed the print dimensions and resolution of the photo. Now, we will remove the stain from the image.

From the “Toolbox”:

·   Select the [ Rectangular Marquee ] tool.

Step #2:

·   Drag a rectangular selection to enclose the stain.

Notice: If we do not make a selection of the dirty area, the filter will be applied to the entire image.

Step #3:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose Filter > Noise > Dust & Scratches.

Step #4:
The [ Dust & Scratches ] dialog box appears.

·   Check the “Preview” box.

·   Click once over the plus (+) button to magnify the image so we can see individual pixels more clearly.

Step #5:

·   Position the pointer in the preview window. The pointer changes to a hand.

·   Drag inside the preview window with the hand to scroll the window so we can see the area containing the stain.

Step #6:

·   Drag the Threshold slider to 0, so that all pixels in the selection can be examined.

Step #7:

·   Drag the Radius slider left or right. As we adjust this option, the image gets blurry. Stop when we have the smallest value that eliminates the stain.

Step #8:

·   Drag the Threshold slider gradually to the highest possible value without showing the stain.

·   Click [ OK ].

Notice: When applying this filter, we may have to try different combinations of radius and threshold settings before we find the compromise between sharpness and hiding the defect.

Step #9:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose Select > Deselect.

The stain is removed.
Step #10:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose File > Save.

Save our work and then go to the next lesson.
