Lesson 12

Learning how to resize an image for printed output

Introduction

When we prepare an image for printed output, we may want to resize the image while controlling the resolution and file size.

The following lesson will teach you how to change an image’s print dimensions and resolution without changing the number of pixels in the image.

In Lesson #11, we have cropped a photo. Let us check the print dimensions of this photo.

Step #1:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose View > Rulers.

Rulers appear along the top and left hand side of the active window, showing that the image is 2 inches × 3 inches.

Step #2:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”

·   Choose Image > Image Size

The “Image Size” dialog box appears showing that:

The photo’s print dimensions are 2 inches × 3 inches.

Resolution is 229ppi.

Pixel Dimensions are 458 pixels × 687 pixels.

File Size is 921.8K

Step #3:

·   Check the [ Constrain Proportions ] box, so that height-to-width ratio is preserved.

Step #4:

·   Uncheck the [ Resample Image ] box.

·   See the Document Size section:

The link between Width and Height changes to include Resolution as well, so that when we enter a value in one of the text boxes, the other values will be automatically updated.

Step #5:

·   Enter 150 in Resolution.

Width automatically increases to 3.053 inches.

Height also automatically increases to 4.58 inches.

Notice: Pixel Dimensions and File Size remain unchanged.

·   Click [ OK ].

As pixel dimensions remain unchanged, the image makes no difference on the screen.

However, the rulers change to reflect the changes we have just made.

Step #6:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose File > Save.

Save our work and then go to the next lesson.

Conclusion

In this lesson, we learned how to change image resolution and print dimensions with the total pixel count preserved.
