Level 3

Lesson 10

In this lesson, you will learn how to use the Color Range command to select areas based on related colors.

Introduction

The Color Range command selects areas of related color in an image. This command gives you more control than the Magic Wand tool, and will allow you to select areas with more precision.

This lesson will teach you how to generate selections based on color values, and then how to apply filter effects to the selected areas.

Step #1:

·   Open a file that contains related colors scattered over different areas of the image.

Step #2:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose Select > Color Range.

Step #3:
The “Color Range” dialog box will appear.

·   Next to “Select”, choose [Sampled Colors].

·   Enter 0 in the text box labeled “Fuzziness”.

·   Click the [ Selection ] button.

·   Next to “Selection Preview”, choose [None].

·   Select the [ Eyedropper ] tool.

Step #4:

·   Use the [ Eyedropper ] tool to click once on the rooster’s crown. This will sample the red color.

Step #5:

·   Enter 40 in the text box labeled “Fuzziness”.

Note: As we increase fuzziness, we are expanding the range of selected colors. The white shapes in the preview area correspond to the selected areas in your image. As you increase fuzziness, these will expand.

Step #6:

·   Select the [ Add to sample] Eyedropper tool.

Step #7:

With [Add to sample] Eyedropper tool selected:

·   Click on the three areas indicated in the image to sample different levels of the color red.

Step #8:

Note: The white shapes in the preview area will expand each time you click a red area in the image.

When you have finished clicking on three areas:

·   Click [ OK ] to close the dialog box.

All the red areas on the rooster are now selected.
Step #9:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose Filter > Pixelate > Pointillize.

Step #10:
The “Pointillize” dialog box will appear.

·   Enter 5 for “Cell Size”.

·   Click [ OK ].

Step #11:

·   Go to the “Menu bar”.

·   Choose Select > Deselect.

All the red areas on the rooster are now filled with small red dots.
