Variations

This is part 2 of color corrections. The first part was covered in Lesson #13.

Introduction

In this lesson, we will show you some more techniques that will help modify the colors in your images. You will learn how to increase or decrease the levels of individual colors in the shadows, mid-tones & highlights.

Step #1: Original Image  

Here is our original image without any color changes.

Step #2: Changed Image  

Here is our image after the color changes we made in Lesson #13.

Step #3: Color Variations  
From the Main Menu, click:

[ Enhance ]

From the next menu, click:

[ Adjust Color ]

From the final menu, click:

[ Color Variations ]

Step #4: The Color Wheel  

The “Primary Colors” are:

1.      Red

2.      Green

3.      Blue

The “Secondary Colors” are:

1.      Cyan

2.      Magenta

3.      Yellow

Note: Rules Of Colors 1. If you add Red          - you subtract Cyan

2. If you add Cyan        - you subtract Red

3. If you add Green       - you subtract Magenta

4. If you add Magenta   - you subtract Green

5. If you add Blue         - you subtract Yellow

6. If you add Yellow      - you subtract Blue

Step #5: Color Variations
The Adjustments
 

There are 3 areas of adjustment:

1.      The Tonal Zone

2.      The Amount of Adjustment

3.      The Color to Adjust

Step #6: Increase Yellow
- Mid-tones
 
Set the “Tonal Zone” to:

[ Midtones ]

Click on:

[ Decrease Blue ]

Note: There is no yellow control. But, decreasing blue has the same effect as increasing yellow – see “The Rules of Color” above.

Step #7: Increase Yellow
- Shadows
 
Set the “Tonal Zone” to:

[ Shadows ]

Click on:

[ Decrease Blue ]

Note: There is no yellow control. But, decreasing blue has the same effect as increasing yellow – see “The Rules of Color” above.

Step #8: Increase Yellow
- Highlights
 

Set the “Tonal Zone” to:

[ Highlights ]

Click on:

[ Decrease Blue ]

Note: There is no yellow control. But, decreasing blue has the same effect as increasing yellow – see “The Rules of Color” above.

Step #9: Increase Red
– Mid-tones
 

Set the “Tonal Zone” to:

[ Midtones ]

Click on:

[ Increase Red ]

Step #10: Darken Mid-tones  

Set the “Tonal Zone” to:

[ Midtones ]

Click on:

[ Darken ]

Step #11: Accept Changes  

To accept the color changes, click on:

[ OK ]

Step #12: Final Image  

Here is our final color adjusted image.

Step #13: Comparison  

Here are the before and after images.

The left panel shows the original image before we made any of the color changes in the last lesson.

The right pane shows the image after the color changes made in this lesson and the last lesson.

In this lesson, we provided you with more techniques to help modify the colors in your images. We covered increasing and decreasing individual colors in the shadows, mid-tones & highlights.
