Lesson 13

Color Hue / Saturation

This is part 1 of color corrections. The second part will be covered in the Lesson 14.

Introduction

In this lesson, we will introduce you to the process of modifying the colors in your image. You will use the “Hue/Saturation” function to make the adjustments. First you will learn to assess the colors in your image; then you will learn how to change your image as desired.

Note:

The correction of this image is for demonstration purposes only.

We have exaggerated the color corrections for illustration purposes.

Step #1: Select Image

We have selected this image of a cave.

We hope to illustrate how you can bring out, and exaggerate, the colors in your image.

Step #2: Hue/Saturation
From the Main menu, click:

[ Enhance ]

From the next menu, click:

[ Adjust Color ]

From the final menu, click:

[ Adjust Hue/Saturation ]

Step #3: Hue/Saturation
Main Screen

We now come to the “Hue/Saturation” main screen.

In the “Edit Window” it reads:

[ Master ]

This tells us that all color channels will be affected by any changes.

Step #4: Individual Color Changes

If we go to the “Edit Window” & click the drop down menu, we see that we can select any color for individual adjustment.

Step #5: Assess Red

From the “Edit Window”, select:

[ Red ]

Then move the “Saturation” slider all the way to the right - to 100%

This shows us how much red is hidden in the image.

Now we return the “Saturation” slider to  0%

Step #6: Assess Yellow

From the “Edit Window”, select:

[ Yellow ]

Then move the “Saturation” slider all the way to the right - to 100%

This shows us how much yellow is hidden in the image.

Now we return the “Saturation” slider to  0%

Step #7: Hue to Right

From the “Edit Window, select:

[ Master ]

Then move the “Hue” slider to the right - to +32

This shows us how moving the  “Hue” slider to the right affects our image.

Now we return the  “Hue” slider to 0%

Step #8: Hue To Left

From the “Edit Window, select:

[ Master ]

Then move the “Hue” slider to the left - to -22

This shows us how moving the  “Hue” slider to the left affects our image.

Now we return the  “Hue” slider to 0%

Step #9: Adjust Reds

From the “Edit Window”, select:

[ Red ]

We set the “Hue” slider to -25

We set the “Saturation” slider to 27%

Step #10: Adjust Yellows

From the “Edit Window”, select:

[ Yellow ]

We set the “Hue” slider to -17

We set the “Saturation” slider to 40%

Step #11: Adjust Master

From the “Edit Window”, select:

[ Master ]

We set the “Saturation” slider to 40%

We set the “Lightness” slider to +2

Step #12: Final Image

When we clicked:

[ OK ]

Now we have our image with the color changes we made.

Step #13: Comparison

Here is a comparison of the before and after images.

Don’t forget, we have exaggerated the color changes for illustration purposes.

Hold on. We’re not done. We’re going to punch up the colors even more in the next lesson.

Summary

In this lesson, we introduced the process of modifying the colors in an image. We used the “Hue/Saturation” function to make adjustments.  First we learned to assess the colors in our image; then we learned how to implement the desired changes.
