Lesson 9
Fixing
a Photo - Cropping
This is the final lesson on making
basic corrections using the
“Quick Fix” screen.
Often, we want images to fit a
certain size frame or mat. This is
where cropping comes into play. |
Introduction |
In this lesson you will learn how to
set some important preferences. We
will then cover how to crop your
image to a preset dimension and how
to choose your own cropping
dimensions and resolution. |
Step #1: Select Photo |
From the “Photo Well”, click
on the image that you want to work
on.
A blue border will highlight the
selected image. |
Step #2: Quick Fix |
From the Main menu, click on:
[ Edit ]
Then click on:
[ Go to Quick Fix… ] |
Step #3:
Before & After |
Once you enter the “Quick Fix”
screen, set the “Before & After”
view to “Portrait”.
“Rotate” to correct the
orientation if necessary.
Note:
These steps were illustrated in the
Lesson #5. |
Step #4a: Set
Units / Rulers |
We need to set a few preferences
before continuing.
From the Main menu, click on:
[ Edit ]
From the drop down menu, click on:
[ Preferences ]
From the next drop
down menu, click on:
[ Units & Rulers ] |
Step #4b:
Making
Settings |
Set the “Rulers” to:
[ Inches ]
Set the “Print Resolution”
to:
[ 240 ]
Set the “Screen Resolution”
to:
[ 72 ]
or [ 96 ] |
Step #5:
Crop Tool |
Next, select the:
[ Crop Tool ] |
Step #6a:
Crop Method#1 Preset Crop |
There are a number of “Preset
Options” that contain the most
common aspect ratios.
You can select one of these to use. |
Step #6b:
Crop Method#2 Setting Crop
Dimensions |
Using this method, you can set the
dimensions that you want for your
image.
You set the:
1.
Width
2.
Height
3.
Resolution
240 for prints
72 or 96 for email |
Step #7:
Place the Crop |
The next step is to drag your mouse
around the image until you get the
part of the image you wish to crop
the way that you want it.
The part of the image that will be
cropped out and disappear, will
appear in the darker part of the
picture, outside the selection
lines. |
Step #8:
Finish the Crop |
In this example, the red arrow is
pointing to “Color”. This is
where you can change the color of
the margin to be cropped out, if
needed.
When you are happy with your crop,
click on:
[ Check Mark ] |
Step #9:
Before & After |
Don’t be alarmed the cropped image
appears smaller than the “Before”
image, as it does in this case.
The “Before” image is shown
at screen resolution (i.e. 72 or 96
dpi).
We set the “After” image to
print resolution (i.e. 240 dpi). |
Step #10:
Exit & Save |
Now you should exit the “Quick
Fix” screen and save the changes
to your image.
The methods for Exiting & Saving
were outlined in Lessons #5 & #6.
Remember, these changes only occur
on a copy of the original, not on
the original. As you can see here,
both pictures will appear in the
“Photo Well”. |
Summary |
In this lesson you learned how to
set some important preferences. We
covered how to crop your image to a
preset dimension and how to choose
your own dimensions and resolution
for cropping. |
