Lesson 4

Getting a Photo

If you have not set up your card reader yet, go to Lesson #3.

If the Welcome Screen is still present, go to Step #1.

If the Welcome Screen does not appear when you start the program, go to Step #2.

Introduction

In this lesson, Step #1 will help you make sure that you have the Organizer active and not the Welcome Window or the Editor.

Steps #2-7 will assist you in downloading your images from the card reader.

Steps #8-11 will help you to isolate the photo that you wish to work on. 

Subsequent lessons will show you how to fix, print or email the selected photo.

If you have not set up your card reader, go to: Lesson #3 – “How to Set Up your Memory Card”.

If you have set up your Card Reader in Lesson #3, the “Welcome Screen” should not appear.  You can move onto Step #2.

If, for any reason, the “Welcome Screen” still appears when you start the program, you will have to turn that off.

If you look at the bottom left of the “Welcome Screen”, it should read: “Start Up In” with a drop down menu beside it.

The first option is:

“Welcome Screen”

We don’t want this.

The second option is:

“Editor”

We don’t want this.

The third option is:

“Organizer”

We want this, so click on:

[ Organizer ]

The Organizer is new for Elements 3.0.  It was not present in Elements 2.

It is a major step forward and the way of the future for Elements.

When you insert your memory card to download your images, Windows tries to help us.

We don’t want Windows to help us.

Therefore, when this screen appears, click on:

[ Cancel ]

Once your Memory Card Reader is set up, and you place your memory card in the card reader…

The Adobe Photo Downloader will begin immediately.

Click on:

[ Get Photos ]

The program will then retrieve all the new photos off your memory card.

These will be added to the “Photo Well”.

If you try to download photos that are duplicates of ones already in the “Photo Well”, you will receive the following message.

Your “Photo Well” will now contain only the images that were just downloaded from your memory card. 

The “Adobe Album” program only showed you the last images downloaded in the “Photo Well”. You had to press the “Show All” button to see all of your images.

In “Elements3.0”, all the images appear in the “Photo Well”. They are grouped by date.

To see photos that were downloaded on a different date, just select the date from the “Date Selector Bar” located above the “Photo Well” or use the “Scroll Bars” to the right of the images to move to any image taken on any date.

Use the “Thumbnails Views” slider at the bottom right of the screen to resize the images in the “Photo Well” as desired.

Here we have selected small thumbnails by sliding the slider to the left.

We see many images, but not much detail.

Here we have selected midsized thumbnails by sliding the slider to the middle of the range.

We see fewer images but more detail.

Here we have selected large thumbnails by sliding the slider to the right.

We see very few images, but much more detail.

Use the “Scroll Bar” on the right side of the “Photo Well” to move through all the images in the “Photo Well”.

When you find the photo that you want in the “Photo Well”, click on it.

A blue box will appear around this image to indicate that you have selected it to work on.

Now that you have selected a photo to work on, you can move ahead to Lesson #5 – “Fixing a Photo”.

In this lesson, Step #1 helped you make sure that you have the Organizer active and not the Welcome Window or the Editor.

Steps #2-7 assisted you in downloading your images from the card reader.

Steps #8-11 helped you to isolate the photo that you wish to work on.
