Lesson 6

The most important difference between Album Starter & Album Full Version relates to fixing images.

The Starter Version only allows Automatic Fixes.

The Full Version provides Automatic Fixes with the option of Manual Override.

Fixing Photos

General Fixes

You may feel that many of your images do not need any repairs, but every image should be sharpened. This is where sharpening happens.

Introduction

This lesson will deal with fixing and/or improving your images.

We will cover fixing the lighting, adjusting the color and sharpening your images. We will cover how to undo some of your changes when corrections don’t go well.

Step #1: Select a Photo

To fix a photo, you have to select the photo that you want to work on from the “Photo Well”.

This is done by clicking on the photo as shown.

Step #2: Fix

The next step is to use the “Icon Menu” & click on:

[ Fix ]

Step #3: Fix Photo

From the drop down menu, select:

[ Fix Photo ]

Step #4: Prepare The Image

You will now come to the “Fix Screen”.

You should set up the “Before & After Views” and rotate the image if necessary.

You will also have to set the screen up so you can zoom in & out on your image.

This was covered in Lesson #5
Step #5: Auto Fix With Manual Override

The Starter Version of this program only allowed for Automatic Fixes – if you didn’t like the auto fix all you could do was undo it.

This version, the Full Version, allows you to use Auto Fix first and then manually adjust it if you want to.

Step #5a: Auto Fix Only

The illustration on the right shows the entire pane in “Auto” mode

The 3 Auto/Manual toggle buttons are circled.

These toggle buttons are all in “Auto” mode.

Step #5b: Auto + Manual Fix

The illustration on the right shows the entire pane in “Auto” with the possible “Manual Override”.

The three toggle buttons are circled.

These toggle buttons are all in “Auto with Manual Override” mode

Step #6a: Auto Fixing Lighting

First make sure that you have depressed the button named:

[ General ]

We recommend that you leave the pane in “Auto” mode to start.

Click on the check box beside:

[ Fix Lighting ]

You should see an immediate change in the “After” image.

You have just made an “Auto Fix”.

Step #6b: Manual Adjust Fixing Lighting

Now click on the [ Auto/Manual ] toggle button to the right.

The “Manual Override” sliders should appear.

Note that these sliders are already positioned by the “Auto” setting.

You can now move these sliders to taste – wait for each adjustment to take effect on the screen

Moving this slider all the way to the left adds no effect.

Step #7a: Auto Fixing Color

Moving this slider to the right makes colors appear warmer, enhancing the red & yellow tones.
Moving this slider to the left makes colors appear cooler, enhancing the blue tones.

Step #8a: Auto Sharpen

When images are captured by a digital camera, some of the sharpness is often lost in the digitalization process.

“Sharpen” is used to reclaim some of this sharpness.

First make sure that you have depressed the button named:

[ General ]

We recommend that you leave the pane in “Auto” mode to start.

Click on the check box beside:

[ Sharpen ]

You have just made an “Auto Sharpen”.

Step #8b: Manual Adjust Sharpen
Now click on [ Auto/Manual ] toggle button to the right.

The “Manual Override” sliders should appear.

Note that these sliders are already positioned by the “Auto” setting.

The “After” will usually not change enough to see the effect of applying “Sharpen”do not over sharpen
Sharpen Slider Effects:

Moving the slider to the right to increase the sharpness of the image.

Moving the slider all the way to the left adds no sharpening effect.

Step #9: Undo / Redo
If you are not happy with any of the fixes that you have carried out, you have two choices.

1. Go back and readjust any of the sliders to taste.

2. Undo any corrections by un-checking the box beside that particular correction.

Step #10a: Example:

Poor Color Fix

By way of example, we have set the
“Fix Color” sliders on the panel to the left side – to make the colors way off.

With the “Fix Color” box ticked – these poor colors are in effect.
Step #10b: Example:

Undo Color Fix

With the “Fix Color” box not ticked – the poor colors are not in effect.

Final Reminder:
You will receive one last reminder that the changes have been made on a copy of your original – your original image remains unchanged.
The Fixed Photo:
The new edited version will now appear in your “Photo Well”.

Summary

This lesson dealt with fixing and/or improving your images.

We covered fixing the lighting and adjusting the color in your images. Every digital image needs some, but not too much, sharpening. We covered how to undo changes when corrections don’t go well.
